Vested quarter attempts to secure jobs under old quota system: LGED
In a press release, it stated that despite changes made to the quota policy following a court order, efforts are being made to recruit from a waiting list created under the old system.
A vested quarter is attempting to secure recruitments in the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) for various positions under the previous quota system, the Local Government Division said today (3 October).
In a press release, it stated that despite changes made to the quota policy following a court order, efforts are being made to recruit from a waiting list created under the old system.
According to the media release, certain individuals took positions near the LGED Building in Agargaon to push for their recruitment under the outdated quota rules.
The recruitment notice for 2,237 posts across 12 categories in LGED's revenue sector—ranging from stenographer-cum-computer operator to community organiser and office assistants — was published on 26 December 2022. The final selection of eligible candidates was completed on 5 October 2023, following written and oral examinations, adhering to the previous quota system set by the then government.
In accordance with a circular issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on 17 April 2023, a waiting list of candidates, in a 1:2 ratio for each post, was sealed and kept under secure conditions at the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.
The waiting list was to be used if any selected candidate failed to join or resigned after being appointed, in which case the next candidate from the list would be recommended to fill the vacancy.
However, following a Supreme Court ruling, the Ministry of Public Administration revised the quota system on 23 July 2024.
Under the new policy, 93% of government job appointments will be merit-based, with 5% reserved for the children of freedom fighters and Birangonas, 1% for members of small ethnic groups, and 1% for individuals with disabilities or those from the third gender.
"In light of the current situation, the public administration ministry must determine whether to proceed with direct recruitment for 12 revenue sector positions in LGED from the existing waiting list, which was created under the previous quota system, or to create a new waiting list based on the current quota system," reads the press release.
