Traffic-free Dhaka on holiday? Not for commuters in capital
Dhaka commuters across the capital have been facing severe traffic congestion since morning
Although Dhaka commuters began today (10 October) – the first day of the four-day long Durga Puja holidays for government officials – with expectations of less congestion, this was not the case.
Dhaka commuters across the capital have been facing severe traffic congestion since morning.
Passengers who are bound for Mohakhali, Banani and other parts of the capital from the Airport area are experiencing bumper-to-bumper congestion on the Airport road.
Asked about the congestion, Sayam Nayon, assistant commissioner of Gulshan Traffic zone, told The Business Standard that people have just begun leaving Dhaka ahead of the long holiday.
"It's also the last working day of the week. More vehicles and more passengers on roads have caused this havoc," he added.
Holidaymakers are also facing congestion at exit points of the capital like Motijheel, Khilgaon, Jatrabari and Sayedabad.
Some garments workers took to the street at Kuril flyover area at around 12:30pm to demand wages and salary. Police officials couldn't give the names of the factories but they were dispersed from the road.
Huge tailbacks have also been reported on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway since today (10 October) morning, according to traffic officials.
