UN resolution asks Myanmar to take back Rohingya from Bangladesh
The council asked the country for repatriation in line with the bilateral instruments on repatriation signed by Bangladesh and Myanmar in November 2017
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted a resolution asking Myanmar to take concrete steps towards the creation of a conducive environment for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingya residing in Bangladesh.
The council asked the country for repatriation in line with the bilateral instruments on repatriation signed by Bangladesh and Myanmar in November 2017.
On June 22, the 47-member UNHRC- in its 43rd session- adopted the resolution on the situation of human rights in Myanmar in Geneva by a vote of 37 in favour, 2 against and 8 abstentions.
The Council encouraged the international community to continue to assist Bangladesh in the provision of humanitarian assistance to forcibly displaced Rohingya and other minorities until their return to their places of origin or their place of choosing in Myanmar.
The councile also urged the Myanmar government to restore full citizenship and voting rights of all ethnic minorities in Myanmar, including the Rohingya, and to ensure free and fair participation of the Rohingya and other minorities in the elections to be held in 2020 in Myanmar, according to Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Since August 25, 2017, more than 7 lakh Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh. They joined around 3 lakh Rohingyas who had fled to the country years earlier.
The Human Rights Council adopted 13 resolutions in which it extended the mandates of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, torture, sale and sexual exploitation of children, the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Iran, North Korea and South Sudan.
Other resolutions concerned the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights; regional arrangements for the promotion and protection of human rights; promoting human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal; promotion and protection of human rights and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of human rights; and awareness raising on the rights of persons with disabilities, and habilitation and rehabilitation.
