Structural change needed to advance state politics: Fakhrul
He explained that the 31-point reform initiative was developed not only by the BNP but in collaboration with all parties participating in the simultaneous movement
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasised the need for structural changes to advance state politics.
The senior BNP leader made the remarks while speaking at a discussion on the party's 31-point state reform proposal, held at Lakeshore Hotel in the capital today (14 November).
He shared a poignant moment, saying, "My grandson still asks me why, even after 53 years of independence, we face so much conflict and haven't achieved a peaceful transition of power."
Reflecting on recent history, Fakhrul mentioned that, after a prolonged struggle, the students and mass people managed to challenge "Awami fascism" on 5 August.
He explained that the 31-point reform initiative was developed not only by the BNP but in collaboration with all parties participating in the simultaneous movement.
Fakhrul expressed hope that these reforms would align with the various commissions the government has formed for state reforms.
At the discussion, former Dhaka University professor Mahbub Ullah emphasised that the constitution should prioritise equality, social dignity, and justice, the core principles of the Liberation War.
He also expressed concern about the potential dangers of a provincial government system for Bangladesh's sovereignty and integrity.
Barrister Fuad, a leader of the AB Party, noted that the 31-point reform proposal focuses on constitutional changes rather than party reforms.
He urged for the implementation of Article 70 not only within parliament but also within political parties to foster a culture of internal discussion and dialogue.
