30 injured as two BNP factions clash in Brahmanbaria
At least four motorcycles were also torched during the infighting that followed tension over an upcoming conference
At least 30 people were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of two factions of BNP in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila today (18 November) over the upcoming conference of the party's Bancharampur upazila unit.
At least four motorcycles were also torched during the clash in front of the Musa Market in the afternoon, according to witnesses and locals.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control soon, said Bancharampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Morshed Alam.
Locals said BNP's Bancharampur upazila unit is set to organise its conference this Wednesday (20 November). There was tension between the supporters of Abdul Khalek, a member of the BNP's executive committee, and Mehedi Hasan Polash, joint general secretary of Krishak Dal, surrounding this conference.
In continuation of that, Khalek supporters brought out a protest march against the conference from the Palli Bidyut Mor of Bancharampur upazila town this afternoon. When they reached the Musa Market area, Palash supporters started throwing brickbats at the procession, which triggered the clash.
Leaders and activists of both groups were seen carrying locally made weapons, said witnesses.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area after police established calm to avoid further tension and clashes in the area, said OC Morshed.
