Hundreds joining Covid's 1st birthday party!
Only God knows what else is waiting ahead
We cannot celebrate our birthdays with friends in this pandemic, but can we celebrate the birthday of the pandemic itself?
It seems like someone has already come up with the idea because a Facebook event calling for the celebration of one year of Covid-19 pandemic has gone viral with overwhelming responses.
Hugo Quillan created the virtual event titled "Covid-19 1st Birthday Party" and the world heard him loud and clear. Till now, 400k+ people have said yes to the party.
People seem to be pretty hyped up about it too. One of the responders, Tye Petty, posted, "Can we play a game where each of us is blindfolded and has to guess the brand of the hand sanitiser just by rubbing it in?"
Another wrote, "Is this event sponsored by q-tips?"
Although the first coronavirus case was identified by Chinese authority on December 31, 2019, for a weird reason Quillan has set the date of this virtual celebration on December 18, 2020.
The Covid-19 pandemic is by far the most impactful pandemic in the history of mankind. Previous pandemics killed millions of people but those did not have such widespread ramifications in every possible side of human life. It pushed the world into mandatory lockdown while pushing the frontliners into life-threatening positions.
As of now, around 28 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus where nearly 900 thousand people have lost their lives. The world economy has gone into recession; education and future of today's youth are in limbo.
While everybody is asking for the invaluable vaccine on Genie's 'make a wish' list, those seem to be a far cry. Let's not even talk about the politicisation of vaccine right now.
Only God knows what else is waiting ahead.
Maybe that is why Quillan wrote in the event description, "Come join me on the 18th and let's give a toast (and the middle finger) to Covid-19."
What really happens on the 18th is a matter of anticipation.
But to demonstrate "We're stronger than corona" and to make a chilled lemonade with all the lemons the year 2020 is throwing at us, Covid-19 birthday party does not seem a bad idea.
