If murder was legal for a day
Mornings are the worst, Omi's half-asleep brain thinks with growing irritation. Birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the alarm is blaring, along with a very persistent siren outside.
"I am going to kill you," Omi mutters at the alarm clock.
Wait today is the killing day! Omi suddenly feels happy and jumps out of the bed. His ears perk up and yes, that is the siren alright! The annoying wewwewwew means that today everyone has 12-hours to murder anyone without a second thought.
Omi skips through his morning routine with anticipation bubbling in his tummy. For a whole year, he had wanted to wipe so many people off the earth! Today his dreams will come true!
But of course, he too could get in trouble, Omi mused. But why would anyone mess with him? He is just a happy-go-lucky average boy of 17 with no enemies. Still, he should be careful.
First order of the day, getting out of the house safely! Omi peeks out of his room. Ahh, it looks like dad has already left for work, but mom is at the dining table looking murderous. Noticing Omi, she picks up a fork.
Oh, no! Omi thinks. I am already dead, and it is not 9am yet!
"Omi," his mom calls with an ominously calm voice. "If you go out without breakfast today you will be in trouble, and you know I can legally do that today!"
Omi quietly tiptoes to the dining table and feels like crying when he notices the healthy spread his mom has prepared. Why God, why!
An hour later, Omi has managed to satisfy his mother by eating the vile healthy food, dressing in 'modest' clothes (no jeans, no tee shirt, no weed necklace!) and combing his hair. As soon as he's out of his mother's vision, he rushes to untuck his buttoned shirt and rumples his carefully combed hair. What a bad start to a good day!
His mood improves when he gets out of the house. The stray dogs of the area are waiting for him as usual. He's feeding them a cheap pack of biscuits when he notices his first victim of the day. It's the guy that loves to kick his dogs whenever there's a chance. Omi's mouth waters at the thought of killing him. Omi sneaks up behind him and yells, "Die!"
The man jumps a foot to the air and whirls around to see who has decided to kill him so early in the morning. He spots Omi and squeaks, "Why are you killing me? I'm a good man!"
Omi points at the dogs and the man's eyes pop. "You're killing me because of those mongrels? Nooooooooooo." He disintegrates into dust.
After the murder, Omi is in a good mood when he slips into class. He's almost, but not quite late. The professor is one of the ones he hates whole-heartedly, and he knows the woman is disliked by most of the students. All the bright eyes in the class tells
Omi that they're all dying to kill the professor. But the professor is cautious, and does not do anything bad the whole class, even lets them leave 5 minutes early. The students actually look disappointed at not being able to kill her.
On his way home, Omi almost kills the bus driver for yelling at him. But he controls himself because if he's dead the bus would crash and kill innocent people. And Omi really doesn't want to kill innocent people! The matter is taken out of his hand when, just one stop before Omi's house, an irritated traffic police yells "Die!" at the driver and he vanishes. Good thing the bus wasn't running, Omi thinks, dejected. Now he has to walk a mile home.
Omi avoids the house of his childhood friend Mumu and hides behind a dumpster when he sees her cross the road. He still hasn't given back her stack of Sherlock Holmes books. She's been threatening to kill him for a while, today she'll definitely do it if he's not careful.
At last, Omi is home. His mom would have no reason to kill him since he came home before dark, but he should change out of the clothes soon. He stinks like the dumpster he was hiding behind, and his dad would kill him for making the clothes dirty.
Omi is on his way to the bathroom when he hears an ominous sound.
Sniff, sniff, sniff. Omi's little sister Rumi comes out of her room, rubbing her eyes. "You forgot to bring me chocolate today!" she wails.
Oh, no! Omi thinks. This is the end.
"Die!" The little tyke screams, and Omi feels himself turning into ashes.
How could you forget my chocolate, Omi! He can hear the echo even after he's dead. He keeps hearing Omi! Omi! Omi!
"Omi wake up!"
A splash of cold water wakes Omi and he scrambles to sit up on his bed. He looks around, bewildered. His clock says it's nearly 11 am! He's late for class!
"What on earth were you dreaming?" his mother asks. "You looked like it was something bad!"
"Oh, the usual. I died!" Omi says.
