‘Manush is a complete cinematic experience’: Sanjay Samaddar
Bangladeshi Filmmaker Sanjay Samaddar speaks about his upcoming film ‘Manush’ and addresses criticism regarding casting foreign stars in an interview with The Business Standard
Entertainment industries of both West Bengal and Bangladesh have been collaborating heavily in the recent past and their works have also gained immense popularity on both sides of the border. More often than not, these productions, be they movies or series, are very positively received.
In that vein, Bangladeshi Filmmaker Sanjay Samaddar has been making waves in the entertainment arena of 'Bengal' and is coming up with a new movie this November titled 'Manush.'
On top of starring in the movie, famous West Bengal actor Jeet serves as the producer. This aspect significantly contributed to the movie gaining much traction even before its release. Bangladesh's very own Bidya Sinha Mim will be starring alongside him. Sanjay is currently busy promoting the movie before its scheduled release next month and took time out of his busy schedule to speak to The Business Standard team regarding his upcoming film.
"'Manush' is a complete cinematic experience that promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative, emotions, action sequences, music, and outstanding performances by the cast," the director said.
"The film's storyline contains thought-provoking elements that will undoubtedly resonate with viewers. Also, the movie will introduce a new dimension to the action genre that has never been seen before in Bangla movies."
'Manush' marks Sanjay's first-ever directorial attempt outside of Bangladesh but the fact that he is casting a foreign star has drawn some criticism from the Bangladeshi entertainment industry. However, despite the criticism, the director is staying positive about everything.
"It's an honour for me that a superstar from another country has entrusted me with the responsibility of directing the film," he said.
The director also finds the experience of working with a star like Jeet to be an immense achievement. "Jeet is, of course, a superstar and an excellent actor. From listening to stories, script narration and shooting to dubbing, I have seen him work with utmost seriousness throughout the entire process. He is also a complete director's artist on set," said Sanjay while showing his appreciation for the actor.
Jeet is known for his iconic roles in action movies. 'Manush' too will bring the familiar gun-slinging, well-fashioned and fiery-eyed Jeet to the audience.
"His dedication is unwavering. Yet, when it comes to rejuvenating everyone around him, his fantastic sense of humour captivates everyone. Jeet shows immense respect and affection for talented individuals," he added.
There are quite a few notable Bangladeshi actresses who have appeared in Tollywood movies in recent times. Bidya Sinha Mim features prominently on that list and has appeared in quite a few films made in Kolkata, including the 2018 Jeet starrer Sultan: The Saviour. But there have been rumors that Mim was only able to land a role in 'Manush' because of her closeness with Sanjay.
"Mim made a special appearance in the movie, portraying a crucial character. It's noteworthy how artists from Bangladesh are now actively contributing to Kolkata's film industry," Sanjay said in response to the gossip.
"It's amazing to see that artistic talent now knows no borders. Mim's versatility in her work is evident, and she seizes every opportunity to excel in her craft. There's no doubt that she is a trailblazer in her own right," he added.
Sanjay initially gained popularity through his work in dramas and web content. But right now, he is only focused on making movies. Although he has created a platform for himself in Bangladesh and India, he still wants to work in Bangladesh first.
"Being a professional director, I will choose to work wherever I get a good opportunity. I prioritise the honour of my country above all else, and I will make every effort to uphold that dignity, no matter where I work," he concluded.
