In a recent conversation with Dr Nauman Niaz, we had the opportunity to delve into his remarkable journey as a cricket memorabilia collector and learn about his passion for preserving the rich history of the sport.
Dr Niaz's fascination with cricket memorabilia began in his childhood, thanks to the influence of his maternal uncle, Khawaja Rauf Zakria, a former First-Class cricketer. He received two books, the first edition of the Jubilee Book of Cricket by Shri Kumar Ranjitsinhji (1897) and Imperial Cricket by Sir Pelham Warner (1912), which he kept near his pillow and could hardly sleep that night. His mother also contributed to his growing interest by gifting him an autograph book filled with signatures of legendary cricketers from MCC, New Zealand Pakistan and India of the early 50s.
As Dr Niaz's professional career took him around the world, he realised the importance of preserving cricket's history. Meeting legendary collectors like Michael Down and John McKenzie further fueled his passion. They impressed upon him that collecting is an art form that goes beyond gathering valuable items; it involves preserving historically significant pieces that provide insights into the past. Dr Niaz transitioned from an autograph collector to a collector of historical memorabilia. He began acquiring pieces from various auctions around the world, preserving cricket's rich history in the process.
Dr Niaz's collection is a testament to his dedication to preserving cricket history. His collection includes first editions of cricket books, primarily from 1745 until 1915, and extends to the present day. Many of these books are signed by their authors and subjects. However, his collection is not limited to books; it also comprises paintings, art prints, sketches, signed photographs, autograph sheets, match-played bats, balls, stumps, bails, shoes, attire, helmets, caps, and more. It is a diverse and comprehensive collection that encompasses cricket's various aspects.

Additionally, he has rare prints, autographed photographs, and caps from cricket legends.
One memorable experience in Dr. Niaz's collecting journey was the acquisition of an album in an English auction. To his astonishment, the album contained hand-signed photographs of All India Test players from 1932 to the present day, a truly rare and unexpected find.
