Australia's preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy have been dealt a significant blow, with captain Pat Cummins and key seamer Josh Hazlewood both unlikely to feature in the tournament.
The Aussies were already facing a setback following the injury-enforced absence of experienced all-rounder Mitch Marsh, and the potential loss of both Cummins and Hazlewood could further weaken their squad as they aim for a third Champions Trophy title. The 50-over tournament is set to take place in Pakistan and Dubai from 19 February.
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald addressed the latest injury concerns on Wednesday, revealing that the team may need a new captain due to Cummins' likely absence.
"Pat Cummins hasn't been able to resume any type of bowling, so he's highly unlikely to take part, which means we do need a captain," McDonald told Australian radio station SEN.
"Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two players we've been considering for the leadership role while finalising our Champions Trophy squad. They are the obvious choices. Steve has done a great job leading the team in the first Test against Sri Lanka and has significant experience in one-day international cricket. So, it will be between those two."
McDonald also confirmed that Hazlewood's availability remains uncertain, with medical assessments ongoing. Final squad submissions to the ICC are due by 12 February, meaning Australia may need to replace three players if Cummins and Hazlewood join Marsh on the sidelines.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recently suggested that uncapped all-rounder Mitch Owen could step in for Marsh, while Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson are among the pace options being considered as replacements.
Australia have been drawn in Group B for the Champions Trophy, where they will face Afghanistan, England, and South Africa, with hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the eight-team competition.
