Football season might come to a premature close
Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) executive committee will fix the fate for this season’s league and there are chances that the season might be handed a premature finish.
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) football's season was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic after only six rounds of the 24. In such a situation, the league committee was in conflict over either to call the season null and void or hand it a premature finish.
They could not come to a decision and thus Bangladesh Football Federation's (BFF) executive committee will fix the fate for this season's league and there are chances that the season might be handed a premature finish.
BFF have already received a written application from the Bangladesh Football Club Association to declare the season null and void. Some clubs have done the same whereas some have asked for ending the season, announcing a champion.
The problem with declaring the season null and void is that it would see no Bangladeshi club qualify for the 2021 AFC Cup. To ensure the qualification of any Bangladeshi club, the league will have to have a champion and that can be achieved by ending the season prematurely.
The Indian I-League has done the same as they announced Mohun Bagan as their champion after their season also had to come to a premature ending after 16 rounds. But the problem is, the I-League had only four rounds to play whereas BPL has 18 rounds left.
If the season is announced complete early, then Dhaka Abahani will be adjudged champions as they currently top the league with 13 points. But, Chattogram Abahani also have 13 points and according to the rulebook, there must be a play-off to decide the champion.
But in a situation in such, it is unlikely that the play-off will happen and if the season is declared finished, Dhaka Abahani will be crowned champions.
