Kamindu Mendis becomes fastest Asian to record 1000 Test runs, joint 2nd-quickest ever with Bradman
Mendis scored a magnificent hundred, remaining unbeaten on 182 from 250 deliveries. During his innings, the 25-year-old surpassed 1,000 runs in Test cricket. The left-handed batsman reached the 1,000-run milestone in only 13 innings.
Sri Lanka's rising batting star, Kamindu Mendis, achieved an extraordinary feat on the second day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Galle International Stadium, Galle.
Mendis scored a magnificent hundred, remaining unbeaten on 182 from 250 deliveries. During his innings, the 25-year-old surpassed 1,000 runs in Test cricket. The left-handed batsman reached the 1,000-run milestone in only 13 innings.
By taking just 13 innings to cross 1,000 runs in Tests, Mendis has become the third-fastest batter in Test history to achieve this milestone. Mendis is now level with Australian legend Sir Don Bradman in the list of batters fastest (in terms of innings) to 1,000 runs in the format.
As it stands, Mendis and Bradman are only behind Herbert Sutcliffe and Sir Everton Weekes.
Earlier in his innings, when he passed fifty, Mendis set a new world record by scoring his eighth consecutive Test fifty since debut.
Mendis, who made his Test debut against Australia in 2022, is currently leading the chart for the most Test hundreds in 2024. He has struck five centuries this year, placing him one ahead of former England captain Joe Root.
