Messi wins best forward as Van DIjk best defender
Alisson Becker was elected the best goalkeeper as Frenkie de Jong was chosen as the best midfielder.
Alisson Becker, Virgil Van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, and Lionel Messi have won the awards of UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Midfielder of the Year and Forward of the Year respectively.
Alisson Becker was brilliant for Liverpool FC in his first season with the club, where the team reached the final of the Champions League and won it against domestic opponents Tottenham Hotspurs. Liverpool FC also finished second in the Premier League, where Alisson had the most number of clean sheets.
Virgil Van Dijk was a towering presence in Liverpool’s defence and led their watertight defence throughout the season. The Dutch defender also reached the final of the UEFA Nations League with Netherlands where they lost to Portugal.
Frenkie de Jong played brilliantly throughout Ajax’s journey towards the Champions League semifinal last season, where he had dominated the midfield in almost all the matches he played in.
Even though his team FC Barcelona was knocked out from the semifinals, Lionel Messi ended the Champions League as the top-scorer of the tournament. His second goal vs Liverpool in the semifinal first leg was also adjudged as the Goal of the Tournament.
