Record breaking India score fastest team 50 and 100 in Test history
In just three overs, the opening duo Rohit and Jaiswal racked up 51 runs, setting the record for the fastest team fifty in Test cricket’s 147-year history.
If you weren't paying attention to the whites, you might think this was a T20 match. India's openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma, were in devastating form, blasting Bangladesh's bowlers from the very start.
Jaiswal started cautiously, defending the first two balls of the innings bowled by Hasan Mahmud. But what followed was a flurry of boundaries. Jaiswal hit three consecutive fours, taking 12 runs from the opening over. The carnage continued in the second over, bowled by Bangladesh's Khaled Ahmed. Rohit Sharma smashed two sixes off the first two deliveries, followed by a single from a leg-bye. Jaiswal finished the over with a four, and India collected 17 runs from the over.
The third over saw even more mayhem. Hasan seemed to forget that he was playing a Test match, as Rohit hit another six, while Jaiswal added a six and two fours. By the end of just three overs, India had raced to 51 runs.
The partnership was finally broken by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who bowled Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain scored 23 off just 11 balls, including a four and two sixes. While Rohit set a new record for the fastest team fifty, he also achieved another feat by becoming only the fourth batsman in Test history to hit sixes off the first two balls of his innings. Before Rohit, this rare record was held by West Indies' Foffie Williams (1948), India's Sachin Tendulkar (2013), and Umesh Yadav (2019).
Despite Rohit's departure, Jaiswal's batting blitz continued. He reached his half-century in just 31 balls, marking the fourth-fastest fifty by an Indian batsman in Test cricket. The record for the fastest Indian Test fifty still belongs to Rishabh Pant, who achieved the feat in 28 balls. Kapil Dev holds the second spot with a 30-ball fifty, while Shardul Thakur also reached fifty in 31 balls.
India reached the three-figure mark in just 10.1 overs, marking a flying start. In Test matches where ball-by-ball data is recorded, no other team has ever scored 100 runs in such few overs. The previous record also belonged to India, who reached 100 in 12.2 overs against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 2023. Prior to this, Sri Lanka held the record for the fastest 100 against Bangladesh, having reached the milestone in 13.2 overs during a match in Colombo in 2001 as part of the Asian Test Championship.
