China closes east coast airspace ahead of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan
China has closed off its east coast airspace around the Xiamen area close to Taiwan and placed nearby Jinjiang airport in Quanzhou under PLA air force control after the US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi started her flight to Taiwan.
Pelosi earlier stated that she intends to fly into Taipei Tuesday (2 August) evening, reports China Briefing.
She is scheduled to meet Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Wednesday.
Pelosi will become the most senior US political figure to visit the island in 25 years, ahead of the Taiwanese Presidential elections in 2024.
Beijing views the visit as highly provocative and has warned of military action.
In response, the US has positioned the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier and the USS Tripoli, a large amphibious assault ship close to Taiwan's east own coast.
