Community fridges are being set up every week
In the US, more than 50 million people experienced hunger in 2020, up from 35 million the year before. Meanwhile, communities have come up with a novel way to help feed those going hungry.
Painted refrigerators are popping up in cities across the country. Community fridges are being set up every week. It's a new way for neighbours to help each other.
"The idea is that it's stocked by the community, it's maintained by the community, and those are the same people that are using it. So every fridge is specific to its community and they all work a little bit differently. They all serve different types of people. But primarily, it's a refrigerator that anyone can come put things in and anyone can come to take things out," Melissa Moulton Church, a user of the LA Community Fridge, told the BBC.

The fridges are set up on the pavement and plugged into local stores or homes that allows for 24-hour service.
Organisers say the need for fridges will outlast the pandemic.
