11 more arrested in Ctg lawyer Alif murder case
Police have arrested 11 more suspects in connection with the murder of Chattogram lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed during a clash following the rejection of former Iskcon leader Chinmoy Krishna Das's bail application.
So far, 22 individuals have been arrested in the case.
The arrests were made last night (25 January) during raids conducted in various areas of Chattogram city, according to Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
The arrestees are Premanandan Das Buja (19), Ranab Das (24), Bidhan Das (29), Bikash Das (24), Rumit Das (30), Raj Kapoor (55), Samir Das (25), Shiv Kumar Das (23), Om Das (26), Ajay Das (30), and Devi Charan (36).
The suspects were produced in court at 8:30pm today (26 January) under tight security. After hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam ordered the authorities to send them to jail.
Mohammad Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, the lawyer for Advocate Saiful Islam Alif murder case and an assistant public prosecutor, confirmed the information.
Earlier, on 26 November, at around 11am, when former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was produced before the court of Chattogram 6th Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam, his lawyers applied for bail. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.
A large group of people believed to be supporters of former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari blocked the prison van carrying him to jail for about two and a half hours. Later, the police dispersed the protesters by throwing sound grenades and took Chinmoy to jail.
Severely injured during the protest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was rescued from the alley of Rangam Cinema Hall opposite the main entrance to the court and taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
