15 injured in clash over illegal car stand eviction in Sylhet
Mayor, officials and employees of Sylhet City Corporation including policemen were attacked during evicting illegal
Sylhet mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury, officials and employees of Sylhet City Corporation among 15 others were attacked during evicting illegal stands of microbuses and private cars on Wednesday noon in Chauhatta area of Sylhet city.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Jyotirmoy Sarkar said the police brought the situation under control by firing 16 rounds of blank shots.
When police stopped them, the transport workers attacked them. Police brought the situation under control after half an hour.
At least 15 people, including councilors and policemen, were injured in the clash. The incident took place at around 1pm on Wednesday.
One has been arrested over the case.
According to Sylhet City Corporation sources, the Chauhatta-Amberkhana road is being renovated in Sylhet where microbus and private car workers have been setting up illegal stands for a long time.
The workers had occupied most of the sidewalks and roads in the Chauhatta-Dargah area of this road. Hundreds of cars are parked here every day.
Sylhet City Corporation evicted this illegal stand last Saturday. The campaign, led by the mayor, was thwarted by transport workers. He later ordered them to leave the sidewalks and roads within three days.
