26 killed as speedboat collides with bulkhead in Madaripur
At least 26 people were killed after collision between a sand-laden bulkhead and a speedboat in the Padma river of Madaripur's Shibchar on Monday morning.
Madaripur deputy commissioner Rahima Khatun confirmed the matter.
According to local administration, the Speedboat carrying 31 passengers left Shimulia at 7.30 am. When the boat reached Kanthalbari Puraton Ghat area, it sank following a collision with the anchored bulkhead.
After the incident, so far 26 bodies have been recovered.
Besides, five people were rescued alive from the spot.
One boat passenger still remains missing.
Local and fire service personnel have conducted rescue operations.
Meanwhile, a six-member probe committee has been formed over the incident.
Azharul Islam, deputy director of the local government department of Madaripur district administration, has been made the head of the committee.
The district administration has distributed Tk 20,000 to each victim families.
The DC said that the speedboat was plying on the route breaking lockdown rules.
The incompetence of the driver is responsible behind the accident, she added.
