2.31 lakh Indian eggs arrive via Benapole at Tk7.5 per piece

In a bid to stabilise the rising prices of eggs, the government has imported about 2.31 lakh eggs from India through the Benapole land port in Jashore.
"The third consignment of 231,840 eggs arrived at the port today [6 October], " Masudur Rahman, revenue officer at the Customs Check Post Cargo Branch, told The Business Standard.
He said the eggs would be cleared from the port as soon as possible after inspection.
Earlier on 9 September, a total of 231,840 pieces of Indian eggs entered the land port and in the first consignment on 5 November last year, 61,950 eggs were imported.
Othello Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Benapole Customs House, said, "According to the invoice, the total cost of the imported eggs was $9,969 and each dozen eggs cost $0.56.
"That means each egg cost Tk5.70 and after addition of 33% customs duty the import cost stands at roughly Tk7.5 per egg."
According to port officials, a Dhaka-based company named HydroLand Solution has imported these eggs. The eggs have been exported by an Indian company named Sri Lakshmi Enterprises.
C&F agent Ratul International has submitted documents to the Benapole Customs House on behalf of the importer to clear the egg consignment.
About the egg inspection, Binoy Krishna Mandal, an official of the Benapole Livestock Department, told TBS, "We have received the documents from the importer. There is no equipment to test eggs here. The eggs will be cleared based on the Indian certificate."
