2.31 lakh more eggs imported from India with reduced duty thru Benapole
A total of 14,52,990 eggs were imported by one firm through this land port between 5 and 21 November
Amid the spiralling prices of eggs at local markets, another shipment of a little over 2.31 lakh eggs has entered the country from India at a 5% import duty through the Benapole Land Port.
Dhaka-based Hydro Land Solution imported the eggs yesterday (21 November) with only Tk0.76 import duty per egg, the land port's Deputy Director Mamun Kabir Tarafdar told The Business Standard today (22 November).
He said, "The importer cleared 2,31,840 eggs today at the reduced duty. Importers will enjoy the 5% duty benefit until 15 December."
Ikramul Hasan Sajib, a representative of Hydro Land Solutions, said, "The clearance of eggs at a 5% duty rate began on 21 October. Now each egg is expected to be sold in the wholesale market for around Tk9."
On 17 October, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) slashed import duty on eggs from 25% to 5% to control prices in the local market. Egg consignments are clearing Benapole customs following this directive since 20 October.
According to custom house sources, a total of 14,52,990 eggs have been imported by a single firm through Benapole port between 5 and 21 November.
The interim government has also granted several other companies import permits but they have yet to start importing eggs.
