“The police and fire services had initiated the rescue operation in the morning. Around noon, the army joined the efforts, and the missing bodies were found around 12pm,” said Sajlu Laskar, public relations officer of Sylhet City Corporation.
Three members of a family were killed after being trapped in a collapsed house following a landslide in Sylhet's Chamelibagh residential area today (10 June).
The deceased have been identified as Aga Karim Uddin, 31, his wife Ruzi Begum, 25, and their six-month-old son Tanim. Their bodies were recovered around six hours after the disaster struck.
"The police and fire service had initiated the rescue operation in the morning. Around noon, the army joined the efforts, and the bodies were found around noon," said Sajlu Laskar, public relations officer of the Sylhet City Corporation.
The landslide occurred around 6am after heavy rainfall for the last few days.
Local councillor Md Jahangir Alam said, "Two brothers and their families lived in that house. Six people got trapped inside. Police, fire service, and local authorities could rescue one brother, his wife, and their child. However, the other brother, his wife, and their son were still trapped inside.
"Continuous rainfall has made the rescue operation complicated and slow."
Narrow pathways prevented rescue vehicles and equipment from entering the scene, he added.
Sylhet has been experiencing heavy downpours for the past few days, while several areas of the district have already been flooded.
