Rashid replaces Md Mahbub Hossain
The government today appointed Sheikh Abdur Rashid as the cabinet secretary for the next two years on a contractual basis.
A gazette notification has been issued in this regard, signed by Nilufa Yeasmin, senior assistant secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.
Rashid replaces incumbent cabinet secretary Md Mahbub Hossain.
Rashid's two-year service will be counted from 14 October or the day when he will join, reads the notification.
He was appointed as per Section-49 of the Public Service Act 2018, it added.
Earlier on 17 August, the government appointed Rashid, a retired officer, as the senior secretary of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education for two years on a contractual basis.
According to the website of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, the 1982 batch officer of the Civil Service (Administration) cadre, has held numerous positions in his long career. His roles include Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Sherpur Upazila (Bogra), Additional Deputy Commissioner of Feni, and Deputy Commissioner of Tangail.
He also served as the Director General and a Director of the Prime Minister's Office and has been a faculty member at the Rural Development Academy, Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy, and Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre.
In his extensive career, Rashid has held several key posts, including Senior Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Public Administration, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and the Planning Division, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Chief Controller of Imports and Exports in the Ministry of Commerce.
He also chaired Petrobangla and served as Additional Secretary in the Public Security Division.
Sheikh Abdur Rashid was born on 5 May 1957, in Satkhira district. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from the University of Dhaka, later achieving a PhD in Public Administration from the same institution. In the 1982 BCS examination, he ranked 4th in the combined merit list and secured 1st place in the administration cadre.
