407 killed in accidents during Eid holidays: Jatri Kalyan Samity
Deaths increased 24%, and accidents 147% from last year
At least 407 deaths and 1,398 injuries were reported in 399 accidents across the country during the Eid holidays this year, the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passengers' welfare platform, has said.
In 2023, some 328 deaths and 565 injuries were reported in 304 accidents during the same time.
"The death toll in road accidents increased 24.08%, while the number of injured increased 147.43% compared to that of last year," Mozammel Haque, the platform's secretary general, told a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) today (20 April).
Apart from road accidents, two waterway accidents left seven people dead and five injured, while 18 train accidents left 24 dead and 21 injured across the country over the Eid holidays, Mozammel told reporters.
"We've compiled the statistics based on reports published in national and regional newspapers and online news portals in the country," he said.
Lutftun Nesa Khan, a former lawmaker, Abdul Haque, a public transport expert, and Towhidul Haque Litton, vice-president of the Jatri Kalyan Samity, were present at the press conference.
