Actions coming against officer who tried to exonerate accused in July uprising cases: Home adviser
Anyone involved in this will be brought to book. Although he (accused officer) is currently on leave, he won't be able to remain on leave for long, he says
Legal actions will be taken against the officer involved in attempting to exonerate the three main accused in the investigation report on the murders of Sabuj and Shajahan during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the New Market area, Home Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said today (25 December).
"Anyone involved in this will be brought to book. Although he [accused officer] is currently on leave, he won't be able to remain on leave for long, and we will take action against him," the adviser said while responding to reporters after visiting the St Mary's Cathedral in Dhaka's Kakrail, on the occasion of Christmas Day.
"The investigation officer failed to follow the proper procedures for submitting the charge sheets/investigation reports. Such actions will not be tolerated," he added.
Although the adviser did not disclose any names, a report published in a national newspaper today revealed that a police investigation officer had drafted a final report clearing former law minister Anisul Huq, and Salman F Rahman, former private industry and investment adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in two murder cases connected to the student-led uprising that occurred in July-August.
The report stated the investigation officer also attempted to exonerate former director-general of the National Telecommunications Monitoring Center Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan.
However, the issue came to light before reaching the court, and the cases are now under re-investigation.
According to documents and police sources cited by the newspaper, the investigation officer tried to submit the final report to the court while concealing his identity as a member of the detective branch and pretending to be a regular police officer.
"He did not obtain the necessary permissions from senior officials in this matter. Following the revelation of the situation, he has reportedly gone on leave citing illness," it added.
