ASK condemns 'false and harassing' attempted murder case against ZI Khan Panna

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has strongly condemned the attempted murder case filed against Supreme Court senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna, calling it "false and harassing."
In a statement issued today (20 October), ASK expressed concern that the case may have been filed out of dissatisfaction over Panna's recent comments regarding the country's human rights situation and socio-political context.
ZI Khan Panna, who is the chairperson of ASK, has been actively involved in legal battles concerning the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
In the statement, signed by ASK's Senior Coordinator Abu Ahmed Farzul Kabir, it was noted, "From the very beginning of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, ZI Khan Panna has supported the students' legitimate demands and provided legal assistance in cases where student leaders were detained. He has also spoken out publicly, upholding his principles and values."
ASK further speculated that the lawsuit might have been filed by those displeased with Panna's human rights advocacy, stating, "Given the nature of his discussions, opinions, and role in addressing human rights and current social issues, there is reason to suspect that this case stems from discontent on the part of some faction. It appears to be a clear attempt at harassment, which is highly unwarranted and condemnable."
ASK described Panna as a lifelong advocate for human rights, highlighting his consistent efforts against extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture.
"At times, he has faced backlash from different groups for speaking up against crossfire, disappearances, and repression. He has also worked tirelessly to protect freedom of expression and the rights of religious and ethnic minorities," the statement added.
ZI Khan Panna has long been regarded as a champion of the rights of marginalised communities, fighting for justice and equal rights for ordinary people, the organisation emphasised.
His efforts, the statement concluded, have been instrumental in promoting political and civil rights in the country.
