Deaths from mob lynching more than doubled to 128 in 2024: ASK
The number of people killed in mob lynchings more than doubled in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to a report by Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK).
The legal aid and human rights organisation, in the report released today (31 December), said 128 people were killed in mob lynchings in 2024.
Of these, 57 people were killed in Dhaka division, 19 in Rajshahi division, 17 in Chattogram division, 14 in Khulna division, seven in Barisal division, five in Mymensingh division, five in Rangpur division and four in Sylhet division.
In 2023, 51 people were killed in mob lynchings.
The report also states that 21 people were killed in extrajudicial killings or died in the custody of law enforcement agencies in 2024.
The ASK said 147 incidents of vandalism of houses, temples and businesses of the Hindu community took place in different parts of the country in 2024.
The report also mentions incidents of human rights violations against ethnic groups in the country. On 24 December, the houses of 17 Tripura families were burnt down in a fire in Lama upazila of Bandarban.
On 18 September, a young man named Md Mamun was killed in a mob lynching in Khagrachhari. In the wake of the incident, clashes broke out between Bengalis in ethnic communities in Khagrachari and Rangamati, resulting in the death of four people.
The report further states that after the fall of the previous government, unidentified people attacked about 70 indigenous families in various places of the country including Rajshahi, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Dinajpur, and Thakurgaon, from 5 to 7 August.
