AUW hosts first ever inter-department debate competition
The final debate topic was “Policymakers Should only be Selected Based on their Educational Qualifications”
The Asian University for Women (AUW) Debating Society hosted the first ever inter-department debate competition on its campus on Tuesday.
Students from various majors and academic backgrounds participated at the event in teams of three, said a press release.
A total of 16 teams competed in the Asian Parliamentary style debate, discussing issues on policy, education, media, feminism, and more.
The final debate topic was "Policymakers Should only be Selected Based on their Educational Qualifications".
The debating club is comprised of more than 500 members from 19 countries.
The lively discussions of the participants showcased competing perspectives of the diverse student body at the Asian University for Women.
Asian University for Women Debating Society also announces that it will organise the 1st AUW Inter-University Debate Championship from February 28 to 29 in 2020. This inter-department competition was a prelude to this. The second installment will bring in the voices of debtors from universities across Bangladesh.
The inter-department competition was adjudicated by Dr Selim Reza, Dr Tiffany Cone, Dr Elena Popa, Mr Micheal Eaton, Mr Jason Homer, Mr John Remarek, Ms Raisa Rahman, and Ms Faria Shamsun.
Members of faculty and staff, including University Registrar Dr Dave Dowland, Head of the Science Program Professor AKM Moniruzzaman Mollah, Professor Ahmedul Kabir, Professor Masudur Rahman, Director of Auw Writing Center Rajani Rao Palleti attended the event.
In the competition of final round Team Pakistan attended by Sidra Gul, Mehwish Rehmat, and Faheema Baig won the debate championship and Team Spirit attended by Maleha Chowdhury, Lutfun Nahar Anika, and Adiba Ahmed became the runner up.
After the competition, awards and certificates were distributed among the participants.
