Bangladesh, India worked out exchange of fishermen to aid fishing communities: MEA
It stated that the Indian government attaches the highest importance to the safety, security and welfare of their fishermen
Bangladesh and India worked out exchange of fishermen keeping in mind the primarily humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities on both sides, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said today (2 January).
"In recent months, several Indian fishermen have been arrested by Bangladesh authorities when they happened to inadvertently cross the International Maritime Boundary Line and entered Bangladesh waters. Several Bangladesh fishermen have also been apprehended by Indian authorities in similar circumstances," the MEA said in a press release.
It stated that the Indian government attaches the highest importance to the safety, security and welfare of their fishermen.
To this end, it has worked assiduously to secure the release of our fishermen from Bangladesh custody.
Earlier in the day, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said Bangladesh and India will exchange 185 fishermen, who were detained in their respective countries, on Sunday (5 January).
On the same day, 90 Bangladesh fishermen will also be released in a mutual release and repatriation operation.
At least 95 Indian fishermen were released from Patuakhali District Jail and Bagerhat District Jail today.
