BFIU seeks bank information of ex-speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, family

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has sought the bank account information of former speaker of parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, her husband and her two children.
The BFIU, which is responsible for tracking financial crimes and money laundering, sent letters to various banks and financial institutions today (5 September).
The letter asked for the account information of Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, her husband Syed Ishtiaq Hossain, their son Syed Ibtesham Rafiq, and daughter Lamisa Shirin Hossain.
Shireen Sharmin Chaudhury was last elected Member of Parliament from a seat in Rangpur.
After the Awami League came to power in the 2008 election, Abdul Hamid was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament. Following the appointment of Abdul Hamid as president, Shireen Sharmin was elected as speaker on 30 April 2013. She remained in the position after Awami League's victory in the 2014 elections, continuing to serve through subsequent terms.
On 5 August, Sheikh Hasina resigned as the prime minister in the face of student protests, leading to the dissolution of Parliament by the president. An interim government was sworn in on 8 August.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury resigned from her post as Speaker on 2 September, 27 days after Sheikh Hasina's resignation. After submission of resignation letter to President Md Sahabuddin it was accepted and executed the same day as per a government gazette.
Moreover, a murder case has been filed against Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, former commerce minister Tipu Munshi and 17 others in connection with the shooting death of gold worker Muslim Uddin in Rangpur. Tipu Munshi is currently in jail in connection with the case.
