Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh took office as Dhaka south city mayor on Saturday noon.
Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Shah Md Imdadul Haque handed over the responsibilities to Taposh during a casual ceremony at Nagar Bhaban.
After taking charge as mayor, Taposh told reporters in an online press conference that the Dhaka south would carry out extensive activities following five outlines in the next 90 days.
The outlines are –bringing the Covid-19 pandemic under control, curbing mosquito breeding, working to make Dhaka a clean and trash-free city, conducting development of roads and easing the traffic jam problem.
The mayor said, "Obviously the ongoing pandemic will be our main concern. The virus never may go away, but we will make a serious effort to fulfil all our responsibilities towards the healthcare of city dwellers.
"Already, a hospital from Dhaka south area has been set up for coronavirus patients. We will do everything under our jurisdiction to overcome the pandemic.
"In recent years we have seen city corporations employing many strategies to fight mosquitoes, but they were not effective at all. Pursuing only one strategy is insufficient for curbing the mosquito population.
"So we have planned to take several strategies to fight the mosquito menace," he said.
The new mayor said that the coronavirus outbreak showed the value of hygiene, and in the next 90 days he would conduct extensive activities to make Dhaka trash-free.
Responding to a query about his plans regarding the upcoming waterlogging problem in Dhaka during the rainy season, Mayor Taposh replied, "We will meet urban planners very soon and make plans for the development of roads under the Dhaka south."
Mayor Taposh will formally begin official activities today, said Public Relations Officer of Dhaka South Uttam Kumar Roy.
