BIWTC to increase number of ferries to tackle Eid rush
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has decided to increase the number of ferries on the important river channels in the daytime, in a bid to deal with the mad rush of Eid holidaymakers.
Nazrul Islam Misha, public relations officer of the BIWTC, confirmed the news to The Business Standard, saying the decision was taken in the face of excessive pressure of home-bound people.
Due to Covid-induced restrictions, only a few ferries are now transporting emergency service vehicles - like ambulance and perishable goods laden truck - during the daytime.
But the mad rush of Eid holidaymakers makes it tough for the ferries to transport the vehicles, he said, adding that it prompted them to take the decision.
However, the freight trucks are being ferried in full swing at night.
Currently, 16 ferries are operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar, while some 17 ferries on the Paturia-Daulatdia.
Of them, three ferries are used to provide emergency services on both routes.
