Coast Guard arrests 16 robbers and drug traffickers in Teknaf
Bangladesh Coast Guard conducted a high-stakes operation in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar on 4 January 2025, resulting in the arrest of 16 robbers and drug traffickers. The operation uncovered 10,000 yaba, three firearms, and three live rounds of ammunition.
The operation, led by BCG Station Teknaf and BCG Outpost Shah Porir, targeted a drug-laden boat entering Bangladeshi waters from Myanmar's Maungdaw district. The boat, detected near Shah Porir Dwip, ignored Coast Guard signals and attempted to escape, prompting warning shots. The suspects returned fire, forcing the Coast Guard to disable the boat by targeting its waterline and engine room.
A thorough search of the boat uncovered the contraband items and led to the apprehension of 16 suspects. One injured smuggler, found in the engine room, was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that the traffickers had dumped additional drugs into the sea upon detecting the Coast Guard's presence. Efforts are ongoing to recover the discarded narcotics.
The detainees, along with the seized items, have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
