Constitution must be formulated through elected Constituent Assembly: Citizens' Committee
A Constitution suitable for running a democratic state should be formulated through an elected Constituent Assembly, leaders of the National Citizens' Committee said today (20 January).
The youth, who led the July uprising, will not leave the streets until they elect a Constituent Assembly, draft a new Constitution and implement it, said the Citizens' Committee leaders at a discussion held at their central office in Dhaka this evening.
Sarwar Tushar, joint convener of Citizens' Committee, said, "A Constitution suitable for a democratic state will be formulated through an elected Constituent Assembly, and then the government will be run according to that Constitution. Those who want to go to parliament with a majority will have to adhere to this roadmap."
Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of Citizens' Committee, said, "After the 1969 mass uprising, the 1970 Constituent Assembly elections were held. As the Pakistanis did not hand over power, the Liberation War was started. After the 1990 mass uprising, a roadmap was announced by the three alliances, who were later betrayed by the next regime. Therefore, after the 2024 uprising, the youth did not leave the streets, they will elect the Constituent Assembly, formulate a new Constitution and implement it."
He also said, "If state reforms are implemented, no more Assad, Nur Hossain or Abu Sayed will have to be martyred in the future."
