A police constable died while chasing a thief in Cumilla's Debidwar upazila last night (28 January).
The incident occurred around 9:30pm in the upazila's sadar area.
The deceased, 59-year-old Mainuddin Bhuiyan, was a constable at Debidwar Police Station. He was a resident of Gaituli village in Muradnagar upazila.
"Mainuddin was just six months away from retirement," said Inspector Md Shahinul Islam of the Debidwar Police Station.
His body has been sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
According to police and locals, two ceiling fans were stolen from a local madrasa mosque in Barur Dakkhinpara of Jafarganj union. The locals caught a suspect and subjected him to a mob beating before handing him over to police.
On their way to the station, the suspect fell ill and was taken to Debidwar Upazila Health Complex.
After receiving treatment, when officers attempted to transport him in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, he tried to escape.
Constable Mainuddin collapsed while chasing him. Locals rushed him to the health complex, where doctors declared him dead.
"Mainuddin did not have much time left in service. He leaves behind his wife, two sons, and two daughters," said his neighbour, Rasel Ahmed.
