Appellate Division stays HC bail to Shomi Kaiser
The chamber judge also fixed 6 January for hearing an appeal in the division’s full bench
The Appellate Division has stayed the three-month interim bail High Court (HC) granted to Shomi Kaiser, former president of e-CAB and actress, in an attempt to murder case.
The division's Judge-in-Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque issued the order today (12 December), after hearing a plea filed by the state.
The chamber judge also fixed 6 January for further hearing by the full bench of the apex court.
Lawyer Ahsanul Karim represented Shomi during today's hearing.
On 6 November, police arrested Shomi from a house in the capital's Uttara area. She was also remanded for three days later that day. After the remand, a Dhaka court had sent her to jail on 9 November.
Earlier, the High Court granted the interim bail to Shomi on 10 December.
According to the case documents, businessman Ishtiak Mahmud, along with others, joined a rally of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 18 July. As the rally reached Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Uttara Sector-4, Awami League supporters pounced on them, firing indiscriminately at the protesters.
One bullet hit Ishtiak in the abdomen, and he was rushed to Evercare Hospital, where he underwent treatment for his injuries.
Ishtiak filed the attempt to murder case at Uttara East Police Station on 29 September against 126 people, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Shomi, and Gaan Bangla television channel chairman Kaushik Hossain Taposh.
