HC: Why recording fingerprints, iris scans not mandatory during birth registration?
Registrar general of birth and death registration, LGRD secretary, IGP and others have been asked to respond to the rule within next four weeks
The High Court Thursday issued a rule asking why it would not be compulsory to take fingerprints and iris scans of all citizens at the time of birth registration.
The registrar general of birth and death registration; secretary to local government, rural development and cooperatives ministry; secretary to public security department of home ministry; inspector general of police and other authorities concerned have been asked to respond to the rule within the next four weeks.
The HC bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after hearing a writ petition.
Lawyer Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan represented the petitioner at the court while Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy stood for the state.
Earlier, on 12 March 2020, Bhuiyan, also founder and executive director of Sarda Society, filed the writ petition, seeking court directions to make it mandatory to take fingerprints and eye iris during birth registration of the citizens, to identify unclaimed bodies, locate missing persons and quickly identify criminals.
