High Court upholds ex-DIG Mizan's jail term
The High Court upheld the 14-year jail sentence for former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The court also validated the seven-year imprisonment of Mizan's wife Sohelia Anar Ratna as well as his younger brother Mahbubur Rahman, and nephew Mahmudul Hasan in the same case.
The single-member bench of Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order after disposing of an appeal challenging the jail terms of the four accused, Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, who represented the ACC at the hearing, told reporters.
ACC Director Manjur Morshed filed the case in June 2019 against four individuals for amassing wealth of Tk3.28 crore using various illegal means and concealing information about wealth totaling Tk3.07 crore.
The national corruption watchdog filed a charge-sheet against the defendants in January 2020, and the trial court framed charges against all of them in October of the same year.
Twenty-seven witnesses out of a total of 33 testified in the case.
