High Court seeks update on Sagar-Runi murder probe by March 4
High Court also excused accused Tanvir Rahman from attending further hearings in a lower court until the investigation report is submitted
The High Court on Thursday directed the investigation officer to provide an update on the progress of Sagar-Runi murder case probe by March 4 next year.
A HC bench, comprised of justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman, ordered Khandaker Shafiqul Alam of the Rapid Action Battalion to submit the progress report.
"If the mystery of the Sagar-Runi murder case is not unearthed, and the true culprits are not identified, arrested and put to trial, it will cast a shadow on the success of Rapid Action Battalion," the High Court bench observed.
The High Court also excused Md Tanvir Rahman, an accused of the case from attending further hearings in a lower court until the investigation report is submitted.
Lawyer Fauzia Karim Firoz represented Tanvir, while Deputy Attorney Md Sarwar Hossain represented the state during the hearing.
The court earlier issued a rule after hearing of a petition filed by accused Md Tanvir Rahman seeking dismissal of the murder case.
Investigation officer Shafiqul Alam was summoned by the High Court on November 6. On that day, the court expressed dissatisfaction after Shafiqul informed it about the progress of the murder case.
On February 11, 2012, Sagar Sarwar, the then news editor of Maasranga Television and Meherun Runi, the then senior reporter of ATN Bangla were brutally murdered in their apartment in South Rajabazar.
Eight people, including Runi's friend Tanvir Rahman are accused in the murder case.
