Return of ‘murdered girl’: Judicial inquiry finds police coercion behind accused’s false confession

The judicial inquiry has found that the accused people made false confessional statement in a case of the alleged rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Narayanganj following pressure from police.
The 25-page report was presented in the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman on Tuesday, said lawyer Shishir Monir.
Earlier on January 4, the judicial investigation into this incident by the Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate came to the High Court.

On September 24 of last year, the High Court directed a judicial probe into the incident.
On August 25, a revision case was filed in the High Court seeking directions to summon the documents on the incident. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir filed the petition on behalf of five lawyers.
On August 24, a report was published in a national daily under the headline "Schoolgirl returns 49 days after being raped, killed and body dumped in river".
Lawyer Monir brought the news to the notice of the High Court bench Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman on Monday.
The court then asked lawyer Shishir Monir to appeal in writing and a revision case was then filed on this regard.
Jisa, a schoolgirl from Deobhog area of Narayanganj city, went missing on 4 July. Her father lodged a general diary at the Sadar Model Police Station on 17 July.
On August 6, Jahangir Hossain, father of the missing schoolgirl, filed a kidnapping case with Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station.
Then police arrested three people named Abdullah, Rakib and Khalil. They made a confessional statement under section 164 in court.
In their confession, they said that they killed Disha after gang-raping her and dumped her body in Shitalakshya river. The accused were sent to jail.
However, the missing schoolgirl was found healthy in the Nabiganj railway area of the port on 24 August at noon.
She called her mother from a shop and asked for Tk4,000.
The parents were surprised and informed the IO about the developments. They later appeared at the police station with the schoolgirl.
The case turned around after the 'missing' schoolgirl resurfaced. The incident sparked nationwide discussion, while the three accused were released from jail.
