State challenges HC dismissal of 4 extortion cases against Tarique
On 23 October 2024, HC delivered the verdict dismissing the cases against the acting chairperson
The state filed a leave to appeal with the Appellate Division today (4 January), seeking a stay on the High Court order that dismissed four extortion cases against BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman in October last year.
The appeal has been added to the Appellate Division's cause list for a hearing tomorrow, according to court sources.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, will conduct the hearing.
In its petition, the state argued that the High Court's decision to dismiss the cases was incorrect.
On 23 October 2024, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict dismissing the four cases against Tarique.
These cases were filed by various individuals, accusing Tarique of extortion at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police stations in the capital during the caretaker government in 2007.
