21 parrots rescued in Ctg, 2 gets 6 months jail
The duo captured parrots from paddy fields by setting up glue traps and sell them in the local market
A mobile court today (8 January) sentenced two individuals to six months in jail and fined Tk1,000 each after 21 parrots were rescued from them for illegally capturing and selling the birds at Chattogram's Noapara Pother Hat Bazar.
Rauzan Upazila Executive Magistrate Aungching Marma, who led the mobile court, handed down the punishment to Palash Kumar Byadh, 48, son of Mahadev of Koyargachhi village in Jhenaidah, and Shipon Chandra Byadh, 50, son of Miranjan Chandra Byadh from Alamdanga in Chuadanga district.
The court also ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional seven days of imprisonment for the offenders.
Earlier in the morning, members of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department (WMNCD) conducted an operation Noapara Pother Hat Bazar area and arrested the offenders red-handed while selling parrots. The members of WMNCD also recovered sticky bamboo traps used for capturing the birds and 21 parrots from their possession.
Dipannita Bahttacharjee, Chattogram Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation officer, told The Business Standard, "The duo capture parrots from paddy fields by setting up glue traps and sell them in the local market."
"Acting on a tip off, we arrested them and produced them before the mobile court where they were sentenced to six months jail," she added.
She further said, "The parrots rescued during the operation were released on the premises of the Rauzan Upazila office, allowing them to return to their natural environment."
The Chattogram Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department emphasized its dedication to stopping illegal wildlife trade and urged the public to report any activities that threaten biodiversity.
