3 arrested for smuggling wild birds in Ctg, 25 birds rescued
A team of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department of Chattogram rescued 25 birds in a raid at Alkaran Lane 3 under Kotwali Police Station area this morning (2 January).
Among the rescued birds there are 16 parrots and 9 maynas.
Three members of a wildlife smuggling racket were also arrested during the drive.
The arrested were identified as Md Hossain Mintu (45), his wife Rani Akter (30), and their associate Md Hridoy (30).
Confirming the rescue and arrest, Dipannita Bhattacharjee, Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Officer at Chattogram Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department, said the racket has been running illegal bird trade operation for a long time.
"Acting on tip off, we conducted a raid around 11:30 am and arrested Hridoy and Mintu red-handed while attempting to sell birds kept in two separate cages," she added.
She further said the rescued birds, classified under protected wildlife, were handed over to the authorities concerned for proper care and rehabilitation.
Legal proceedings against the arrested are currently underway in the court, said the official.
