42 activists of AL, Jubo League, Chhatra League nabbed in Ctg in 24-hour
The arrests were made as part of a special operation to nab all the accused of cases filed in connection with the attacks launched on the protesters during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement
A total of 42 leaders and activists of Awami League, its youth wing Jubo League and its student wing Chhatra League have been arrested and detained from across Chattogram city in the last 24 hours from Sunday (2 February) evening to Monday (3 February) evening.
The Public Relations and Media wing of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) confirmed the arrests through a press release issued on Monday evening.
The arrests were made as part of a special operation to nab all the accused of cases filed in connection with the attacks launched on the protesters during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
CMP confirmed that multiple cases have been filed against those arrested, including charges related to attacks on student protesters during the recent anti-discrimination movement.
On the other hand, several of the detainees face legal action under the Special Powers Act and the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests may follow as law enforcement continues its crackdown on violent and unlawful activities.
Here are the arrestees and detainees as stated in the press statement:
The Bayezid Bostami Police Station arrested an accused named Mamunur Rashid Mamun, 36.
The EPZ Police Station also arrested another person identified as Mamunur Rashid Mamun, 36, along with Tarikul Islam, 26.
Meanwhile, Chawk Bazar Police Station apprehended Md Ashequl Alam Ashik, 38, and Mohammad Ershad, 45.
The Double Mooring Model Police Station arrested Irat Sharif Bijoy, 24, Abdul Azim Apu, 24, Yasin Arafat, 34, SM Nazmul Alam Shuvo, 31, Md Asraf Uddin Sadman, 19, and Sajeda Begum, 43.
The Sadarghat Police Station arrested Md Ishtiaq Munna, 35, Md Ilyas, 51, Md Mojnu, 53, and Rajib Dey, 38, while Chandgaon Police Station detained Aditya Pal, 28, Said Imtiaz Sani, 30, and Ahmad Ali, 54.
The Khulshi Police Station arrested six accused in various cases - Md Shahriar Shawon, 28, Abdul Hannan, 40, Hira, 53, Md Masud Rana, 46, and Mehedi Hasan, 23.
Bandar Police Station arrested two accused including Md Farhad, 28, and Shahadat Hossain Ruman, 30.
The Kotwali Police Station made the highest number of arrests including several political figures, such as Md Zahir Uddin, 47, who serves as the Publicity Secretary of Jamal Khan Ward Awami League Unit-2.
Others arrested were Chattogram Metropolitan Chhatra League Assistant Secretary Abir Sen, 30, and Chattogram Metropolitan Chhatra League Deputy Student Affairs Secretary Anik Sen, 30.
Md Kabir, also known as Chain Kabir or Saint Kabir, 40, president of the Hawkers' League in Chattogram's Station Road area, was also apprehended.
Other arrestees under the station's jurisdiction include Tanvir Rahman Naushad, 32, Ali Akbar, 47, Rezaul Karim, 61, Mohammad Faruq, 55, and Md Iqbal Hossain, 34.
The Pahartali Police Station arrested an accused named Md Raju, 30.
Meanwhile, the Bakalia Police Station team detained Nawab Ali, 55, the Joint General Secretary of Anwara Upazila Awami League; Md Selim, 55, the Convener of Ward-18 Awami League; and Syed Md Obayed, 34, Md Alamgir, 34, and Md Hasan, 35, all of whom hold positions within the Ward-18 Chhatra League.
Karnaphuli Police Station arrested Ahmad Ali, 39, who serves as the General Secretary of the Ward-1 Committee of AL in Char Lakshya Union. The Patenga Model Police Station detained M Sohag, 34, and Saiful Islam, 30.
