Assert Group owner arrested for issuing death threat to UITS VC, others
Police on Wednesday arrested Showkat Hassan Mia, owner of Assert Development & Construction, for allegedly issuing a death threat to University of Information Technology & Sciences (UITS) Vice Chancellor (VC) Mostafa Kamal and others.
Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Sudeep Kumar Chakraborty said, "Showkat Hassan is a warranted accused. Police have arrested him this afternoon and later, produced him before a Dhaka court."
He said UITS is a concern of PHP Group. The group rented 'Jamalpur Twin Tower-2', a building of Assert Development & Construction, in Gulshan area for UITS. For this, PHP Group and Assert Development & Construction signed a deal.

Last year, the university shifted to their permanent campus in Vatara area.
Prior to that its authority paid all the rent including utility services from 2010 to 2019 to the Assert Group as per the deal, PHP Group claimed.
However, the owner of Assert Development & Construction demanded Tk60 crore as rent from PHP Group and issued threats to its VC and others.
Later, the UITS VC filed a case against Showkat Hassan Mia with Vatara police station in this connection.
As per the case statement, Showkat Hassan along with his people not only obstructed the UITS authorities while shifting the university campus but also issued death threats and demanded Tk60 crore extortion.
