RAB arrests fugitive convict in Biswajit murder case
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Mosharrof Hossain, a fugitive convict in the murder case of tailor shop employee Biswajit Das in 2012.
A team of RAB-2 arrested him from a house in the capital's Gulshan area on Sunday. He has admitted his involvement in the murder during the preliminary interrogation, said a press release issued by the RAB on Monday.
Mosharrof has been on the run before the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 awarded the death sentence to eight of the 21 accused and 13 to life imprisonment, including Mosharrof, on 18 December 2013. The High Court upheld the verdict in 2017.
Earlier, on 9 December 2012, Biswajit was hacked and beaten to death from a Jagannath University branch Chhatra League procession near Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka during the blockade programme of 18 parties led by the BNP, according to news published in various media.
Later, the police filed a case with Sutrapur Police Station that night. The next day, after seeing the pictures and video footage published in the media, a bench of the High Court spontaneously ordered the arrest of the people involved in the incident. The police then arrested seven accused.
After the case was transferred to Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Police (DB), the DB issued a charge sheet against 21 workers of the Jagannath University branch of Chhatra League after the investigation.
