4 including main accused arrested over attack on Ghoraghat UNO
The arrestee, Asadul Haque, 35, is son of Amzad Hossain of Osmanpur village under the same upazila
A joint team of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested four people including main accused of the attack on Dinajpur's Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam and her father.
The arrestees are, Asadul Haque, 35, son of Amzad Hossain of Osmanpur village under the same upazila, Jahangir Hossain, convener of Ghoraghat Upazila Jubo League and Polash, night guard of Ghoraghat Upazila Parishad. The name of the other arrested person could not be known yet.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Hakimpur police station's Officer-in-Charge Ferdus Wahid said, "Asadul was arrested from bordering Kaliganj area of Hili around 4:45 am today."
"Acting on a tip-off a joint team of Birampur, Ghoraghat Police Stations and Rangpur RAB arrested him. Asadul was taken to the RAB office in Rangpur," he added.
Earlier, the victim's elder brother Sheikh Farid Uddin filed a case at around 11:30 pm on Thursday against four to five unknown persons with Ghoraghat Police Station over the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Ghoraghat Police Sttaion Amirul Islam confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, "A group of miscreants entered the government quarter of UNO through ventilator with a ladder from 1:05 am to 4:25 am on Thursday. They found UNO Wahida Khanam awake and wanted to know where the keys of cupboard and other valuable things were. They hit her with hammers on different parts of the body including head, as Wahida refused to hand over keys. Her father came to her room after hearing Wahida screaming. Then the miscreants attacked him too."
"When both of them became unconscious due to bloody injuries, the miscreants thought they were dead and fled the spot. Wahida's father regained consciousness at around 6:30 am and started shouting from inside. Then night guard Nazim Hossain Palash came and saw the door to the stairwell of the house is locked from inside. He entered the house through the bathroom's ventilator with a ladder," the statement added.
They were initially admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Later on Thursday afternoon, Wahida, who is still in critical condition, was airlifted to Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air force helicopter when her health severely deteriorated.
Meanwhile, protesters hold a human chain and rally from 11 am to 12 pm today in front of Dinajpur Press Club demanding justice of the accused for the attack on UNO Wahida Khanam.
