Man held with gold bars worth Tk5cr, weighing 4.6kg in Benapole
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a suspected smuggler with 19 gold bars, worth about Tk5 crore, weighing approximately 4.6 kilograms at the Amrakali check post in Benapole.
The detainee was identified as Mohammad Mahfuz Mollah, 26, hailing from Narail.
The BGB personnel, acting on a tip-off, searched a passenger bus heading from Jashore to Benapole. Mahfuz was found hiding the gold bars, made of 24-carat gold, wrapped in a black cloth around his waist.
Later, he was detained after he boarded a bus and the gold bars worth over Tk 4.61 crore were seized.
He was handed over to Benapole Port Police following the incident and a case was filed against him.
Lt Col Saifullah Siddique, commander of the 49 BGB Battalion, said there has been an effort to curb the smuggling of gold, drugs, and foreign currency at the Amrakali check post through enhanced intelligence operations and stricter inspections.
The gold bars were deposited with the Jashore treasury, he added.
