UP member arrested for spreading anti-govt propaganda

Police arrested a union parishad (UP) member from his Chapuir village home in Sadar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Sunday afternoon for spreading anti-government propaganda during the Hefazat mayhem.
The arrested is identified as Md Sharif Bhuiyan, 36, son of Rustam Bhuiyan of Chapuir village in Sadar upazila. He is the UP member of Ward 7 in Machihata Union of the upazila.
Brahmanbaria Additional Superintendent of Police (administration and crime), Md Roish Uddin, said police arrested Md Sharif Bhuiyan for spreading anti-government propaganda on his Facebook post.
During the Hefazat mayhem, he spread propaganda against important government people, including the prime minister and home minister. A case will be filed against him in this connection under the digital security act, the official added.
Activists and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam staged a massive protest in Brahmanbaria during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh from 26 to 28 March.
At least 11 people were killed in three days of clashes with law enforcement agencies. A total of 55 cases have been filed against 414 people with names, while more than 35,000 others were unnamed.
Some 403 Hefazat leaders and activists have been arrested in these cases as of Sunday.
