Mitu murder: Ex-SP Babul gives no statement in court

Former superintendent of police Babul Akter has not given any statement before court in the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

After the end of a five-day remand, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced him before the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan today.

"The court sent him to the jail after he made no confessional statement," Quazi Shahabuddin Ahmed, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, told Prothom Alo.

The CMP official also disclosed that Babul Akter had been somewhat unresponsive during the first three days of interrogation. Later, he made some statements and cried a couple of times while talking. He was also worried about the future of his children.

Quazi Shahabuddin further said the former SP carefully avoided all the questions regarding the murder. He answered all the questions, saying, "Everything is known to you, what else I need to say?"

The sensational Mitu murder case took a dramatic turn last week after two friends of the former SP gave their statement before the court on 12 May.

On the basis of the statements, a fresh case was filed immediately with the Panchlaish Police Station.

PBI shown Babul, who was already in police custody, arrested in the case and sought court's permission for interrogating him in police custody. Responding to the plea, the court placed him on five-day remand.

Mitu was hacked and shot dead by attackers in Chattogram while on her way to pick up her son from school on 5 June in 2016. Babul, who was in Dhaka, filed a murder case a day later.

The incident shook Bangladesh to its core – despite it being no stranger to violence on the streets.
